The Unexpected Gift

Can you imagine what it must have been like to care for Jesus as a child? Joseph didn’t need to imagine it, because he experienced it. He played a vital part in God’s story of Redemption, yet he almost walked away from it all. Like Joseph, many people “accept Jesus” without really knowing what to expect. They end up rejecting Him for reasons that are emotional, intellectual, or moral. Perhaps their reasons are volitional - they simply don’t want to give up control of their own life. Ultimately, Joseph believed God’s Word and his entire life changed. The same can happen for you, but only if you choose to receive the Gift of Christmas: Jesus Christ!

Gifted to Give

We’re all moved by stories of people who lived great lives. There’s something in us that wants our lives to be great as well. How we describe “greatness,” however, isn’t what God calls “greatness.” Greatness isn’t measured by power, authority or accolades. To be great in His eyes means to humbly serve everyone around us, and to do so without any desire for recognition or reward. The Holy Spirit gives us gifts, not to impress others or to elevate ourselves, but to serve others and build them up in their Faith. In Christ, we have the truest example of greatness. He came to serve, not to be served - to humble Himself and to lay down His life. His example shows us: We must descend into greatness!

We have all heard stories about a twelve-year-old graduating from medical school or a six-year-old playing concert worthy classical music on the piano. These examples are the types of people we call “Gifted” in our world today.  However, the Bible is clear that in Christ, we have all been gifted.  What is the gift that Jesus has given you?  Have you discovered it?  Are you using it?

The Gift

Christmas is a wonderful time to celebrate the gift we’ve been given in Jesus. When was the last time, though, that we’ve thought about the gift Jesus came to give us - the Gift of the Holy Spirit? Jesus is Emmanuel - “God With Us” - but the Holy Spirit is God IN us. He gives life and power to those who have placed their faith in Christ. Unfortunately, far too many “Christians” live without the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. They struggle with sin and succumb to fear, leaving this great Gift unopened. If you feel you’re missing something, you just might be missing Someone. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit today!
